[Felix is sitting for this one, his lower body hidden, but the sharp-eyed might notice that his crutch is nowhere in sight. His uniform is also gone for good (for now). He's at the long metal table in his barracks, and the surface is absolutely covered with wires, cables, microchips... It looks like he's dismantled an entire fleet's worth of communicators.

He seems a little annoyed about it.]

Does anyone have a spare computer they could lend me? Or even just a motherboard and a serial port connector cable.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it now, Doc. I... thank you, really. It's a big improvement.

Sure. [Oh wait...important detail.] Who are you?

[This is so jarringly different from the woman who offered to help him -- twice! -- for nothing that he can't help but look surprised again, and this time not so pleasantly.]

I'm... sorry, is this a bad time? I thought you'd want to hear what happened.

[The image of Admiral Cain comes to mind, unbidden, and he frowns. Did he overplay his hand, here? Was he too hostile?]

Felix Gaeta. [Right, that's probably a conversation they should have already had.]

And you? [And are you a nightmare space creature? he wants to ask, but it's hard to think of a polite phrasing.]

Don't worry. I'm not anything that eats people or even kills for fun. The latter is more than some humans can say.

[He can tell there's some nervousness, but after Harper he can't blame Gaeta at all. Harper saw his world destroyed by Nietzscheans. Why should he have any love of them. He doesn't know or can't say what Gaeta's been through, and even if he hasn't met another race before they can be nerve-wracking.]

Robert Capa. Most people just use Capa, though.

You can call me... whatever you prefer. [This isn't a come-on -- he sounds more tired than anything. He's not sure who he's supposed to be, so he may as well let everyone else imagine what they please.]

People here seem comfortable with first names. I'm not a military man.

What do you study?

Various things. I was going to go back to school for my genetics degree, before... [Genocide happened?] ...things got in the way. But I worked in communications and engineering, and I studied biology and then physics before that...

What can I say? I like science.

I can certainly respect that. I don't usually stray outside my own field. Mostly cosmology, but...sometimes I just like the mathematics of it.

Cosmology. [He looks suitably impressed.] I can't say I had a lot of training there, but it came up every now and again on Galactica. After our... previous scientific consultant left, a lot of the questions fell to me. I mostly dealt with the practical, though -- plotting jumps and things like that.

The practical? Something I'm not quite used to anymore.

[He looks like he's about to explain, maybe even get sort of excited-- but instead, he just sort of grimaces wearily.]

Well, that's in the past, now. I suppose if I pursue anything from here it will be just as theoretical.

Not entirely true. There is a lab.

Sorry. [Sarah let out a careful breath, her expression confused for a split second, then she held up a hand before digging for and lighting a cigarette. Her expression flickered, softening noticeably. It wasn't quite the right Sarah, but it was pretty damn close.]

I do. Want to hear. I'm just. [She shrugged almost helplessly.] I'm dealing with some shit. Guess it's making me more of a fucking bitch than I thought. Hang tight? When I'm not getting my ass handed to me by the Universe, I'll drop by. I'll let you know.

[Pandora didn't quite get the tone right.]

Which I've heard is mostly a way of killing time.

There are certainly no more jumps to work on, anyway.

That's not as reassuring as you might think it is. [Not when Cylons can't even be genetically tested for, and not when Cylons can reproduce.

But Rhade's not entirely wrong, he knows. Not that he knows any humans who are actively worse than the Cylons, but there are ~~Kara Thrace~~ some ~~like Kara Thrace~~ who take just as much pleasure or are just as blind to themselves as the toasters are. So he takes this in quietly, and after a moment, returns with:]

[It's completely an assumption, but the way Rhade said it -- not for fun -- has him wondering.]

[It's a little suspicious, but everything he's thinking is miles away from the truth. Mostly, he's thinking that he must have frakked it up, here -- that Gaius has already gotten to her with his charm and impassioned speeches and gotten her to warm up to whatever it was he did.

But he still wants to know what that was, and Sarah is his only chance to find out easily, so he nods and forces a smile.]

Like I said: any time.

Jumps? You mentioned that once. What does that mean?

[He gives him a look, like, seriously? before remembering that apparently not everyone here is used to living on ships. Not his kind of ships, anyway.]

FT-- I mean, faster-than-light jumps. They take a fair amount of work to calculate, especially for a fleet of fifty ships.

I assumed as much, but...it's not really good to make assumptions around here. I've only been exposed to one method of faster than light travel, since we don't yet have that in my time.

How does it work?

[Felix, who's plotted more jumps than any other living human, is all too happy to talk about it, so have some handwavey technobabble, Capa.

[And Capa sort of follows. There are a few questions here and there, but overall...he gets the gist.]

Then you're right. You can't exactly do that here. It's interesting, though, to hear different ways. Harper spoke about slipstreams, which is nothing like that.

I'm not saying I want to do that anymore. I've done hundreds of them -- frankly, I'll be fine if I never say the words "FTL drive" again, or look at another frakking star map.

I just... I'm not sure what I want to do next. If I really have a choice in the matter, that is. [He's not just talking about science, but it's a start.]
