We all died. It just took some of us longer than others. The entire godsdamn human race, wiped out by machines. Robots. But ones that looked like us, acted like us, thought and felt, created... science and art and frakking religion and everything. Just like us, except that they couldn't die, because every time they did they'd just download into a new body and keep going.
