Final Re-Entry: Spam/Video

[Spam for Dean]

[Felix isn't sure what it is about this morning in particular, what's different about today from any other day. Somehow, from the moment he wakes up, he just knows that today is the day. That it has to be. He's been putting it off for a week and a half, ever since Dean woke up, and really, since before that, too... since his own graduation. Whatever power denial has had over him since then, it's been steadily stripping away, and more powerfully and rapidly than ever in recent days.

Not that anything has necessarily been any different, of course. Comas, flooding, disappearances, murder, wanton property destruction. It's all part of a standard month on the Barge.

And it's exactly why he can't stay.

He's strange and distracted all morning: the way he's been since Dean woke up, but much, much worse, and he won't say why. He's not ready to just yet. He goes to work instead, albeit briefly. He writes notes for Iris and Barbara. He carefully gathers whatever is his and whatever he needs from the lab and packs away the laptop Barbara gave him. Then he goes back to 4-18 and waits for Dean to come back, perched anxiously at the desk, the box from the lab sitting nearby.

When the door swings open, he looks up and opens his mouth to speak... but for the first time in a while, words completely fail him.]

[Note left for Iris]

It's been an honor and a pleasure.

I'm actually not joking.

[The note is attached to a file containing samples of Claire's blood and everything Felix has documented so far about it, in case she wants to continue that research. There's one vial missing, taken for himself.]

[Note left for Barbara]

I You

I'm not very good at goodbyes. I'm sorry. The next time the engine acts up, try this.

-Felix
[Attached is a CD which will ultimately turn out to contain the networking program Felix wrote during the last engine room shutdown.]

[Public]

[It's later. Felix has waited until he could do this calmly, and now there's something almost preternaturally still in his posture. He's sitting at the desk in his own room, a cigarette in one hand and what looks like a fairly lengthy typed script in the other. He draws in a deep breath, looks at the script, begins:]

I'm...

[He frowns and stops, scanning the paper again. He shakes his head slightly, sets it aside, and addresses the camera properly, squaring his shoulders.]

...I'm leaving the Barge.

I understand why the rest of you aren't, but I haven't stopped believing that you should. Most of you should, at least. There are other ways -- I'm hoping better ways -- to do what needs to be done, and I'm leaving to try and find them.

But-- [He glances down at the script again and something pulls sadly at the corner of his mouth. He looks back up at the camera and rubs absently at his knee.]

But I wanted to say thank you, first, for reminding me why I should.

[His eyes soften dangerously, just for a second.]

Thank you. Goodbye.

[And with that, he puts the cigarette back between his lips and reaches out, a little too quickly, to sign off for the last time.]
